RARE Antique French Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs/Holder...with Presentation Box!
Beautiful Renaissance style late 19th century French sterling silver hinged asparagus tongs. The handle is decorated with meticulously detailed masks, strapwork, shells, scrolls and acanthus motifs. The scroll and acanthus decor repeats on the elaborate, pierced and chased, silver plated blades. All in all, a simply stunning piece of antique French silverware ~ AND complete with original presentation box! Crafted from the highest quality silver, the handle is stamped with the French Minerve 950 mark (situated under the lever and hard to photograph). The tongs are in excellent condition with only light signs of use, and its patented hinge (Brevete S.G.D.G.) is in perfect working order, blades close smoothly with a firm grip easily maintained.
The presentation box is very well preserved. There is a tear in the lid's lining (most likely the result of attempting to close the box with the tongs in the open position) and what appears to be an ink mark on the inside of the lid. There is some scuffing on the outside of the box, but really in nice condition considering it is 120+ years old!
~An stunning addition to any silver collection.~
Condition of this piece is excellent.
Very minor scuffing from normal use.
Could also use some polishing.
