Synopsis
The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States, popularly known as the 9/11 Commission, was established by Congress and charged with finding out how and why terrorists were able to attack the U.S. on September 11, 2001. Their final report, issued in 2004, became a best seller, and it was seen as a thorough, balanced, and fair account of the events, while providing recommendations for the future. Now, in THE COMMISSION, journalist Philip Shenon reveals that groups behind the scenes drama, recounting the committee's struggle to get cooperation from the executive branch, as well as conflicts among members of the commission. One of the revelations in this book concerns the commission's executive director Philip Zelikow, whose close ties to the White House raised the question of divided loyalties. Shenon recounts new stories involving the major players such as George Tenet, John Ashcroft, and the valiant women who became known as the Jersey Girls. Through it all, Shenon is procedural, balanced, and thorough in his research and presentation of material as he explains what went right and what went wrong on the commission.
