c1890 Sterling Silver Letter Opener by George Shiebler
Finely crafted from sterling silver, being offered is a circa 1890 letter opener by George Shiebler of New York. Quite ornate, done in his Renaissance Revival motif with a pierced fleur de lys at the top of the opener. More fleur de lys are repeated as well as scroll work and floral designs. Design the is same on both sides. Piece has no monograms.
The letter opener is hallmarked with the winged "S" of George Shiebler. Shiebler was located in New York, NY and in business from 1876 - 1910. He was well known as a fine quality maker of flatware, holloware and novelty items. He also made pieces for Tiffany and Co. After 1868, George Shiebler was the ONLY "outside" maker Tiffany purchased silver from. He even made this exact pattern and design letter opener for Tiffany & Co. Other marks on the letter opener include "STERLING" and "4100" which is a pattern number.
Considering the age is over 100 years old,
condition of this piece is excellent.
There is a slight bend at the top of one side of the blade, and a very small notch on the other side.
