Rare Matching Pair of Early 19th Century
Sauce Boats with Stands
Exceptional pair of early 19th century French Restoration era .950 (highest standard) silver sauce boats with stands. Each piece carries the coveted French 1819 "Vieillard" 950 mark.
Featuring sweeping acanthus and palmette capped scroll handles, the sauce boats have gadrooned rims and spreading pedestal feet with gadroon borders. The domed oval stands are decorated with a gadrooned border and rest on four scroll feet with palmette and acanthus decor.
With an impressive overall height of over 10.5 inches, this majestic pair of sauce boats is sure to be the highlight of your formal dining table.
Finely crafted from the highest quality silver, the sauce boats and stands carry the French Vieillard 1st Standard Mark (Head of Michelangelo with a 1) and Paris guarantee marks (Head of Ceres in a circle) in use from 1819 to 1838 with a total weight of 1520 grams (over 48 troy ounces). The front side of both sauce boats and stands are engraved with the initials "MBG".
Crafted during the same era, the sauce boats/stands are identical with just a small weight variance between the two. One sauce boat/stand is stamped with the maker's mark for Sixte-Simon RION (SSR with a biscione) who commenced trading in 1807 at 27 Rue de Harlay, Paris. The other carries the maker's mark for Hyacinthe-Prosper BOURG (vertical diamond shaped hallmark with H P & B) who commenced trading in 1824 at 10 Place Dauphine, Paris. I think it is safe to assume that the crafting of this pair of sauce boats was a planned collaboration as research shows that Rion & Bourg shared the same address at 10 Place Dauphine from 1824-1830.
Condition is excellent,
the only point to note being signs on the underside of the RION stand of an old, professionally carried out, repair to a foot. No dings or dents and loving care through the centuries has resulted in a rich patina.
