Movie description
The beautifully shot A STAR IS BORN recounts a tragic Hollywood tale of fame and misfortune. As young Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) rises to stardom, her husband, former leading man Norman Maine (Fredric March), is in the midst of a heartbreakingly rapid decline. Gaynor is both genuine and funny as the small-town girl who loses her one great love while she pursues another, and March is perfect as the passé alcoholic has-been. The film received six Academy Award nominations and won a special award for its color cinematography.

From maverick filmmakers David O. Selznick (King Kong, Gone With the Wind) and William A. Wellman (The Public Enemy, Nothing Sacred) comes the original, timeless tale of Hollywood fantasy and heartbreak: A STAR IS BORN.

Janet Gaynor portrays Esther Blodgett, a starry-eyed small town girl with a dream of making it big in Hollywood. Facing only rejection, Esther chances into meeting movie idol Norman Maine, played by the incomparable Fredric March. With Norman's help, Esther gets a screen test and, rechristened Vicki Lester, finds herself immediately skyrocketing to fame.

With romance and subsequent marriage, the couple seem set for a storybook ending, but Hollywood is a capricious and sometimes cruel master. Norman, his own fame sinking, lands in a self-destructive alcoholic depression from which true love and Tinseltown fantasy may not be able to rescue him.
