Aah, POWERTOOLS, what might have been...In November '96 this very small Austin, TX company was licensed to manufacture and sell a Mac clone that utilized a MOTOROLA motherboard and was optimized for video production. Although its' top-of-the-line model was rated the fastest by MacUser of any MAC OS brand at the time including Apple (see the June '97 MacWorld ad photo above), POWERTOOLS went down for the count after a year or so when Steve Jobs pulled the plug on the clone program. Another case of the best technology losing out because of market forces; anyone remember the Betamax vs VHS war?...Anyway, about 2 years ago I was trying to determine it's value so I checked the Computer History Museum's website (www.computerhistory.org). On their page for donating computers they had a specific notation to the effect of: "If you're inquiring about donating a MAC clone - thanks, but no thanks - we've got enough examples of the different clone manufacturers". I took a chance and submitted the form anyway and got a reply stating that they wanted mine. I did a catalog search on their website on 9-15 and they don't have any of their products. In my attempts to research them on the internet, I found little information out there about POWERTOOLS. One article I found that sheds some light on the overall situation was in the MACWORLD May '97 issue (www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-19264111.html). The computer has no dings or wear & tear (other than some yellowing of the case) and includes the owner's manual & some miscellaneous paperwork. The large white circle on the front beneath the model # is where I had a sticker attached.
