The Beach Boys had just released their seminal album "Pet Sounds" when they shared this double-headlined concert with Ray Charles at New York's Yankee Stadium. The Byrds, Stevie Wonder, The McCoys, The Cowsills and The Guess Who also played. The Beach Boys performed songs such as "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B" from the new album along with favorites such as "Surfer Girl", "I Get Around", "California Girls" and "Help Me Rhonda".

Essentially a solo project for Brian Wilson, "Pet Sounds" was created after he had stopped touring with the band. He wanted to focus his attention on writing and recording. It was a dramatic change in direction for the band and along with their elaborate layers of harmonies it used sound effects and unconventional instruments such as bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, the Electro-Theremin, and dog whistles.

NOTE: Pet Sounds has been widely ranked as one of the most influential record albums ever released. Mojo Magazine and the New Musical Express both rank the album at number one in their all-time lists.
