Photo
of shake roof on our trackside shanty kit
Just like the
real thing, our shakes are split (not sawn) to thickness. Made from western red
cedar heart wood. They are scaled after full sized 24" shakes. Approximately
1" thick and width varying from 6" to 12". A single 24"x12"
shake in scale size is approximately .042" thick 1" long and 1/2"
wide. Since they are split like the real thing, thickness varies just like the
real thing. We have been extremely pleased with the realistic appearance. Even
though applying them one at a time is very tedious, the end result is amazing,
shown above as roofing material on a track side shanty. In this instance we laid
them out face down and glued them from behind forming a sheet we then applied
like you would any solid roofing material. This method could be used on walls
as well and shown on the tips page.

Seen
above on our Prairie Farmhouse Kit. Scale is 1/2" to the foot, (1/24th).
We sell this product by the ounce. You are bidding on a
package of 4 ounces. An ounce is approximately
350-375 shakes of assorted widths and our results have shown a coverage of 40
to 45 square inches when applied at a scale exposure of 10". This is allowing
for what we call clinkers, (bad split offs). Since you are going to handle them
individually when using them, you can toss them out or use them for ridge cap
etc. We allowed for this in the price. In this way, we can sell you a product
for lots less and so much more real than the sawn doll house shakes offered by
others.
This is a real wood product, and we try to
allow for all variables when we figure coverage area. Number of shingles per ounce
can vary because of material moisture content causing more weight which translates
to fewer shakes per ounce. Also wood grain differences can cause slight differences
in thickness. Just like buying paint, when it says covers 250-600 square feet,
I always figure on the low number. We do our best to deliver exactly what we advertise.
You can count on that. We know that when you see the end result, you will be very
satisfied!
