Handmidi – a fantastic special device for playing a synthesiser like a theremin. This piece of optical technology, coupled with digital processing, enables a synthesiser to be played just like a theremin, by moving the palm of the hand (or any other reflective object) over the HandMidi sensor. But, unlike a theremin, it has available to it the huge range of sounds of the synthesiser, instead of the single traditional woooo sound of the theremin, thus making the HandMidi/instrument combination immensely versatile.
The device connects very simply by means of a standard MIDI cable (supplied) which fits into the MIDI IN input of any contemporary synthesiser.
As the hand moves up and down through the optical field emitted by the HandMidi, the synthesiser will play down or up the scale according to the position of the hand. It is optionally possible to play the synthesiser in normal mode, with one hand, and to use the HandMidi simultaneously, to generate great polyphonic effects. This has special appeal not only for conventional synthesiser users, but also for players of experimental music. I’ve had immense fun with it, particularly because it is possible to go from one note to another at a speed which makes “Flight of the Bumble Bee” (if you’ve ever heard it) seem slow! It’s a really cool device, unlike anything else I have ever used. If the synthesiser is switched on to percussion (channel 10), then an amazing sequence of drum, whistle, and cymbal sounds etc. will be heard as the hand moves through the air, instead of musical tones. is an exciting fusion of theremin and synthesiser, with dual oscillator
voices, built in reverb, vibrato, celeste/chorus, and sweep filters. It also has an attack-decay feature which enables an "amplitude envelope" to be created as an alternative to conventional volume control, offering banjo or pizzicato-like effects. In many ways, its sound is rather like that of the best early analog synthesisers, but with very clean sound. It can play atonally just like an ordinary theremin, but can also be made
to play in major, minor or chromatic scales, making it vastly easier to
play than conventional instruments. There's a nice glide feature where you can alter the rate at which you travel from one note to the next, from instantaneous to several seconds. It's fantastic for home or live
performance, particularly because of the immensely rich and varied
sounds, ranging from the ultra-clean classic theremin sound to grungy,
dirty overdrive sound for wacky effect, especially using the internal
FX features. Oh, yes... even though it has inbuilt speaker, amp and effects, I should also mention it costs a lot less than the Moog Etherwave, the instrument regarded by many as the
