TREES AND SHRUBS: Illustrated A-Z Of Over 8500 Plants
Chief Consultant: Ernie Wasson
Special Limited Edition Published through The Easton Press
Originally released in 2004 by Wellfleet Press, this lush, oversized leatherbound Easton Press edition (now no longer available) is over 900 pages in length with full-color photos throughout. Featuring information on over 8500 different plants, almost all species listed feature individual photographs, each labeled with their botanical names.
Divided into three main sections, this comprehensive work begins with a look at trees and shrubs in general terms; how they differ from each other and from other types of plants, environmental factors that affect their growth, classification, human uses, cultivation and native plants. A color-coded map showing plant hardiness zones, and an explanation of the zones, is also included.
The second section is arranged in alphabetical order according to genus. The genus entries take into account such variables as geographical range, number of species, distinguishing features, commercial uses, and propagation and cultivation requirements. Under every genus entry are a number of species entries (including synonym and common name, if applicable), each containing the plant’s size, growth habit, flowering season, flower color, forms and hardiness zones.
The third section includes color illustrations depicting leaf and flower shapes, growth habits, and structures; a comprehensive glossary; a reference table to assist gardeners in choosing appropriate plants for particular locations; and lastly an index that lists botanical names, common names and synonyms.
This extraordinary botanical reference was purchased directly from The Easton Press. Printed in a limited production run and becoming quite hard to find, this superb Easton Press version of Wasson's work is beautifully bound in brown leather with a traditional hubbed spine, gold leaf accents, cloth-sewn binding, moiré end pages and a silk bookmark.
Carefully stored in a smoke-free environment and in excellent condition, the book is in near-flawless shape showing almost no signs of previous handling, except for faint wear to the gold accenting on the front cover (actually a cosmetic production issue; it was one of the first hot off the press, received this way, but never returned for an exchange). Perhaps the finest existing presentation of botanical material of this nature, this rare edition would make a perfect gift for botanists, horticulturists, herbalists and gardeners.
