Lake Eufaula is the largest lake located entirely in the state of Oklahoma. With over 600 miles of shoreline and 102,000 surface acres, Eufaula offers a variety of recreational opportunities for everyone. The shoreline ranges from vast expanses of sandy beaches to rocky bluffs.
The
City of Eufaula is situated around beautiful Eufaula Cove. Lake Eufaula is the gateway to many outdoor activities such as golfing, hunting, camping, boating, water skiing, wake boarding, and of course fishing. The lake is full of record size largemouth bass, sand bass, black bass, crappie, and catfish and is host to fishing tournaments throughout the summer, along with the well known crappiethon. Below the dam striped bass have been caught in the tailwaters reaching over 40 pounds. Often fishermen are are displayed in the local newspaper catching catfish weighing 50 pounds and more. Especially if you want to try the growing sport of Noodling ;)
Even the fall and wintertime attracts its share of visitors, especially when the shorter days allow the trees to put on a show with a beautiful display of colors before dropping to the ground. You can see deer, turkey, rabbits, squirrels and birds of all kinds year around. Another popular time is around the holiday season. If the lake has received one of its famous snow falls, imagine yourself in a Christmas card setting of snow laden trees, with the scent of Oklahoma native wood burning bright in the fireplaces of the many cabins that dot the shorelines, as you enjoy the company of special friends and family. The serenity of the lake will transport you to a time of special reflection and peace. The outside world will cease to exist for awhile, and your stay at Lake Eufaula will give you wonderful memories for when that outside world demands your return.
Belle Starr "Queen of the Bandits", the most famous woman outlaw, lived and is buried close to the Eufaula Dam. Belle Starr made her home in this region in the late 1800's. Here also was the hideout of her gang, and at times of the Younger Brothers and Jessie and Frank James. Another famous landmark of the area, beneath the waters of Lake Eufaula, is Standing Rock. It was first recorded on papers of early day Spanish explorers. Norse runes carved on the rock were believed by some to have pointed to the location of buried treasure. Much of the colorful history of this area such as Native American life, Outlaw gangs and Civil War battles still remain for visitors to see. The Battle of Honey Springs, the largest and most important of the battles fought during the Civil War in Oklahoma, took place July 17,1863 on a site close by to Checotah which is also the home of the famous singer Carrie Underwood.
Our area is definitely on the move and growing. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, unique restruants, antique shops or craft stores, you will find it here.
