I grew up racing these boats in the Chicago area, crewing for some outstanding skippers, so I am especially pleased to present this model of the well loved and respected LIGHTNING One Design Class of racing sailboats. It was designed by Olin Stephens of Sparkman and Stephens in 1938. The first fleet was established at the Skaneateles Lake Yacht Club in New York state. Since then, more than 15,000 Lightning's have been built and actively raced in 500 Fleets worldwide.

At left: USA 2007 Pan Am Games Team Silver Medal, David Starck, Jody Swanson, Bill Faude

The model has an accurately shaped hull built using the same method as the real boats and finished in glistening enamel, with varnished trim. They are Marconi rigged with jib and main. The running rigging, is authentic to the last detail. She makes an incomparable model and will be a perfect addition to your home, den or office.

The class has international status and is sailed in thirteen countries which is administered by one of the largest one design sailing associations. A World Championship is held every two years. North American, South American and European Championships are held each year as are innumerable regional and District championships. The International Lightning Class Association (ILCA) protects the boat's design and licenses custom and private builders to build boats under its administration. There is room for four adults or a family to daysail, but a crew of three is used when racing.

The Lightning's rig is simple, but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a unique hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. It's hard chine and 130 pound centerboard give her the stability and power of a small keel boat going to windward in strong winds.

LIGHTNING CLASS DIMENSIONS:

LOA"  Beam 6'6"  Draft board down 4'11"  With the board up 5"
Mast height 26' 2" Working sail area 177 sq feet  Weight 700 pounds

TWO VERSIONS OF THIS MODEL ~ 2 COLORS: The first fiberglass Lightning was built in 1958 and it proved to be very slow. In 1963, Martin Weir of San Diego took a mold off Carl Eichenlaub's wooden hull #8390, Bull II, and used it to build the first cored glass Lightning. This new boat proved to be amazingly fast, and Carl used it to win the Midwinter's in St. Petersburg in 1964. This boat, almost overnight, transformed the class, as Lightning sailors soon switched to glass boats en mass. Carl, who built many wooden Lightnings in the '50s was the most successful Lightning sailor in the class' history while he was active. Thanks to Ed Jones of the Mission Bay Yacht Club

In 1963, the Rules Committee allowed for hulls to be made from fiberglass, and today the new boats compete along with the old ones. Consequently, we are offering two versions of the LIGHTNING model. A dark Blue colored wood hulled model and a white hulled one which replicates fiberglass construction. Each comes in only one hull color so there is a single option to select. .Our own preference is for the dark blue, wood hulled version with the classic varnished wood seats and trim.

Pre 1964 model: Dark blue hull and Dacron sails
Post 1964 model: White Hull and Dacron sails

Special features of the wood version include:
      • Hand planked hull over frames
      • Finished in seven coats of hand rubbed enamel

If you've been browsing through all the boat models offered on the internet, you will be hard pressed to find something that represents boats that are North American in design, and are executed as finely overall. You can spend a lot more money for so called "museum quality" detailing, but you can get the same satisfaction from our new line of moderately priced,  high quality models.
OUR FLEET OF MODERATE COST QUALITY MODELS: Don't forget that in addition to the just launched LIGHTNING Class model, we are the source for full hull models of the Schooners Adventuress, America, two sizes of Schooner Bluenose, the schooner Gertrude L. Thebaud, Chesapeake Bay Skipjack, the much admired Herreshoff 12.5, the New York 30 and the famous "S" Boat. A Friendship sloop, and S&S's Odyssey and the IOD Class in four colors. And, the Marshall Sanderling and Beetle catboats. Our collection of J Class includes Rainbow, Endeavour, Enterprise, Shamrock, each as full models or half hulls. In motorboats, we offer Chris Craft's Barrel Back, 1942 Twin Cockpit runabout, a Triple Cockpit runabout, and the 17 foot Utility. In other motor vessels we have the GarWood Speedster, a classic 1920 motor yacht, a lobster boat, and a 1926 Dreamboat. .

As a retired professional Master mariner, and Varsity Offshore Sailing Team Coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, we take pride in offering high quality models of boats known and loved by American sailors at a reasonable price that will give you lasting enjoyment, and pride of ownership. Therefore, please don't confuse our models with others you see on the internet. All MODELS are NOT CREATED EQUAL. There is no comparison to our replicas at near this price. Before you buy, make sure to look at all photographs carefully. Ours will show a model of unparalleled quality and faithfulness to the original builder's plans. Give-always are the rake of the masts, fit of the sails, the proportions of the hull, and the cut of the bow. If you're in doubt, email us!
