Magic Middletown.By Dwight W. Hoover. Bloomington: Indiana University Press. 1986. 181 pages. Softcover. This book is in great condition. The binding is tight and the pages are clean.More than 200 photographs, many with detailed captions, are the main part of this book. The purpose of this book is to capture the image of Muncie at a particular historic moment - the 1920s. It is not meant to be a pictorial history of Muncie, nor even a detailed history of Muncie in the 1920s. However, in order to put the 1920s in context a chapter on the more distant is included. The ten chapters cover: Early Muncie, Making a Living, Automobility, The Merchants of Muncie, Helping Others, The Klan in Muncie, Rituals, Middletown's Women, The Little Red Schoolhouse, and Girls (and Boys) Just Want to Have Fun. The two page index coves nearly 240 entries.
