Album notes
Lee Feldman Trio: Lee Feldman (vocals, piano, organ); Randy Landau (bass); Alan Bezozi (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Rico Nosei (spoken vocals); Michael Levin, Wende Namkung (violin); Christine Ims (viola); Danny Miller (cello); Harold Seletsky (clarinet); David Friedman (accordion); Roger Peltzman (background vocals).
Recorded at RPM and Spa Recording Studios, New York, New York.
One of the more auspicious debuts in recent memory, LIVING IT ALL WRONG introduces a New York singer/ songwriter/ pianist of uncommon depth. On first hearing, Lee Feldman's highly original music and lyrics bring to mind some heavy forebears: Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Monk, Randy Newman, even Beethoven! What's remarkable however is that the songs themselves sound so natural and unforced--whatever influences unified through expert songcraft as well as a sure musical judgement born of long residence on the N.Y. pop and jazz scene. To cite just one example: the simple placing of a diminished chord early in the ballad "Carolyn" suffuses this little portrait of urban (mis)romance with enough poignancy for an album's worth of songs.
Feldman's lyrics--dreamy notations of daily life, its musings, longings and mishaps--are served well by his boyish delivery. His voice might seem a little reedy but he still hits all the notes he needs without any evident strain. Occasionally Feldman will cut loose with a spiky piano solo, which adds a spacy dimension to the tightly-constructed sound of this album, a highly polished affair thanks to producer Roger Peltzman. Other highlights: the string quartet arrangment for" Surbuban Song," an empathetic glimpse of a marriage on hold. Or the ominous, rolling New Orleans cadences of "Always Till Always," a song about the seductions and pains of making art.
