GENERAL JOHN A. LOGAN memorial cover postmarked at Jacksonville, Illinois on Feb 28, 2006. Blue printed portrait cachet #2404 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS. Cover franked with 3 cent GAR Civil War commemorative stamp. This Civil War General was a congressman from Southern Illinois who volunteered for the Union Army and fought for General Grant as a colonel. He was promoted to Brig. General in 1862 and Major General in November of 1862. He fought under General Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign and returned to politics after the war. A 441 foot WWII Liberty Ship cargo vessel was named in his honor. Union General, John A. Logan was born February 9, 1826 in Jackson City, Illinois. He graduated from Louisville University and fought as a volunteer in the Mexican War. The ship was built by Permanente Metals Corp Richmond, California in 1943.
