ITEM DESCRIPTION

Hard covered book with dust jacket titled SPIED A BLOSSOM PASSING FAIR with paintings by Josephine Dorr Russell. Published in April 1969 by The World Publishing Company, this is a stated first edition. Foreword by David McCord - unpaginated with 21 beautiful full-page watercolors which are mirrored by a selection from a famous poet on the opposite page. A scarce work and one of the very few to reproduce the charming and distinct watercolors of this 20th Century American botanical artist.

Condition is very good - light soiling and shelf wear to dust jacket and white hard covers. All printed pages and plates are clean and intact. Book measures 7 by 10 inches tall.

FROM THE DUST COVER: With the accompaniment of the thoughts of some of the world's greatest poets, "Spied A Blossom Passing Fair" brings together for the first time the magical watercolors of Josephine Door Russell. Mrs. Russell, a native New Englander still in awe of the richness of her land, brings much of the same poetic integrity and simplicity to the canvas as did Robert Frost to the page.
Mignonette, hibiscus, red clover, the lantern plant, milkweed and many more grow within these pages, representing flower life from Florida to Iceland's Reykjavik.
Appropriately enough, each of these poetic watercolors is interpreted with a passage from the work of a famous poet - from those you might expect (Wordsworth, Emerson, Shelley, Whitman) to those who may surprise you (Aiken, Khayyam, Baudelaire).
For those who appreciate the exquisite taste of the watercolor and those of us who have always intuitively understood that unique "somethingness" in the flower, this book presents a seductively endearing collection of images, both visual and verbal.
