Synopsis
Historian Kevin Mattson revisits President Jimmy Carter's famous "malaise" speech of 1979, which represents one of the most unorthodox political orations in recent history. Three years into a disappointing presidential term, with America sinking into a doldrums marked by the energy crisis and rampant inflation, President Carter gave a nationally televised speech wherein he addressed the country's "crisis in confidence." Carter urged citizens to restore meaning to their lives through positive actions, rather than an accumulation of possessions, and he asked for a collective commitment to energy conservation. History has shown that Carter's ideas were compelling and pertinent, but his speech was ridiculed by conservative politicians and much of the press, helping to steer the country down the road to the Reagan era. In this terrific historical revision, Mattson analyzes the intense internal debate which preceded the speech and the cabinet firings which followed, and wistfully wonders what might have been if more people had supported Carter's call to action.

Publisher's Note
An assessment of the events that led up to Jimmy Carter's infamous 1979 "malaise" speech places it against a backdrop of such events as the gas crisis and the Iran-hostage situation while explaining that the speech had far greater relevance than its reception reflected, in an account that also claims the speech inadvertently set a course for the conservative movement.

Industry reviews
"Kevin Mattson is sometimes too much in thrall to Mr. Carter...but he never lets his admiration get in the way of delivering a cautionary tale and a great read. And his faith in the significance of popular culture is both refreshing and right on the mark. It's about time someone found Blondie as important as Barbara Tuchman."
 (06/22/2009)

"Mr. Mattson writes well about Mr. Carter's staff and the intense jockeying that led up to the malaise speech....[He] lays out the events of that summer like a big, rolling banquet. This isn't a high-end meal...but it is surprisingly tasty, if only because the historical ingredients are fascinating and first-rate."
 (07/14/2009)

"[A] bizarre chapter in American politics has inspired...'WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU UP TO, MR. PRESIDENT?,' a short revisitation that is exactly what political history ought to be--incisive, fast-paced and fun to read."
