Gr 3-5 This book conveys the importance of body language as one way that people communicate with one another. It includes a variety of gestures used around the world, from Japanese bowing to Polynesians rubbing noses. The author also introduces involuntary gestures such as blushing, the use of universally understood hand and arm signals, and stories that can be told through dance. Unfortunately, some of the captions for the cartoon illustrations present confusing generalizations. One, for example, says that "Dark colored clothes...make the person who is wearing them look important and official. Light clothes, on the other hand, make people feel that they can talk to you." Another is exaggerated: "Folded arms, hunched shoulders, and crossed legs provide a barrier between you and the other person rather like building up battlements in a war." The caption for the photo of the Three Wise Monkeys who hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil is in the wrong order. Wait for something more carefully done on this topic and skip this one. Katherine Borchert, Arlington Central Library, VA Lopate Drawings, photographs, and written information in small doses fill the large pages, conveying a good deal of information clearly and without being intimidating. The cartoonish drawings are mediocre, in both their execution and their reproduction, but they are bright and colorful. The suggested activities are easy to do and match the subjects well. [This book] offers good advice on reading the body signals of others and on changing your own body language. It also includes examples from the animal kingdom. Annotation copyright H.W. [It] is not worthy of recommendation; there are simply too many misstatements of fact, as, for example, the following: . . . 'A wide-eyed person is always taken by surprise.' . . . The glossary gives as the definition of 'aboriginal' as 'The Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of Australia.' Some of the illustrations are equally misleading. . . . The general concept of this book is good. The problem is in its execution: Over and over, one encounters statements or illustrations that are almost sure to be misinterpreted by the target audience.
