Le Portefeuille de Madame Dupin

Dame de Chenonceaux

par Gaston de Villeneuve-Guibert

c1895 - Paris - Calmann-Levy

8.5" x 6", 596pp

DETAILS

Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble paper covered boards, marble paper pastedowns, frontispiece, and two foldout facsimilies.

Madame Dupine (1706-1799) owned Charmonceau Castle from 1733. Along with her husband she often entertained people such as Voltaire. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was their son's tutor. She famously saved the castle during the French Revolution.

This volume contains letters Madame Dupin sent to other French personalities including Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu.

This volume bears the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. This volume also bears his mother in law, Elizabeth Cameron's, signature on the title page.
