Child's Brown Transferware Biscuit Jar
LITTLE MAE with PETS
Charles Allerton & Sons
Staffordshire England 1880

This is a fabulous child's transferware toy biscuit jar or sugar pot, circa 1880. The octagonal covered jar stands about  4 1/2".  It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The base is marked "Staffordshire England". (Other pieces in the same pattern are marked with Allerton's pattern number 780 registration number 106741.) The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern designs captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The little pot was originally part of a complete miniature tea set. The color is a rich sepia brown.

The pot depicts Little Mae sitting on a stoop in a doorway with a kitten on her lap, a cat drinking milk from a bowl, a dog sitting beside her and a bird looking on from overhead, surrounded with an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies and fruit along the rim. The image repeats on each side of the jar.

The piece is in great condition, with a chip on the inside of the lid, not visible when the lid is in place. No other chips cracks or repairs. The lid has a steam hole, which means it was made to fit a matching teapot, but the lid fits perfectly and the border trim is a perfect match. Minor transfer imperfections original to the making and typical of these primitive early wares. Most collectors of Little Mae know that sometimes she is very cute and other times she is very homely, depending on the transfer print. This particular piece depicts her as a smiling and demure little girl, adding to the naive charm of the piece. A delightful sugar that displays great, ready to be played with by another generation of children. A fine example of these whimsical wares. Animal lovers all adore this collection of patterns, too!

We have also listed a companion trio of trio of cups along with an interesting range of early miniature and children's transferware this week, and have much more in stock.  We are happy to combine shipping of multiple purchases. Please send us an email before the auction ends with any questions or if you are looking for something in particular or would like to see additional photos.

Thank you for bidding!
