The book is in good overall condition. Pages are clean with mild to moderate tanning,I see no markings. Boards are a glossy dark blue with oatmeal fabric spine. Gilt titles. Corners are bumped and worn through. Price in pencil inside first blank page. Dust jacket is not so purty no more - well worn and very darkly tanned and soiled, heavy edgewear with chipping and tears.
The glamorous elegance that House & Garden brings to all their offerings is highly evident in this beautiful book. Many photographs are color and full page or even double page. Every room in the house is covered, even libraries, offices, small furniture for chic apartments, studios, storage, entryways, staircases, bathrooms and kitchens. Some great looking patios and gardens emphasize the 50s trend to indoor-outdoor living. Decorative accessories, furniture arranging, color, flooring, draperies and curtains, table settings, lighting, and DIY are all covered.
Photo captions are often very detailed like the following: "The dining corner of a modern country house looks out on a broad sundeck with a backdrop of trees. To be in keeping with the setting,the furniture has to be simple and strong. Here is contemporary furniture:a surfboard-shaped table of Kelobra wood on black iron supports and chairs of matching black iron with cerulean canvas seats and back pads. The oblong wooden plates are an up-to-date version of the trencher. Napkins are rough natural linen. All glasses are of the tumbler type. On the floor are squares of blond matting which match the curtain fabric."
Very interesting is the mixing of Mid Century Modern Contemporary furniture and design aesthetics with more traditional styles such as French Provincial and Far Eastern. Lots of opulent Hollywood Regency looks scattered among the more minimal Modern rooms. Section covering period furniture and design is concise and extremely useful.
