An all-inclusive handbook accessible to anyone - seasoned artist or beginner - Contemporary Jewelry brings together in one comprehensive source the history, design principles, materials, techniques and processes of of an art form that has a singularly brilliant development in the 20th century.
Organized topically according to the major processes of the art, the subject matter is presented in a series of sequences that in verbal explanations and pictorial illustrations demonstrate step-by-step how finished work derives from such procedures as fusing and soldering, cutting, hammering, casting, stone setting and finishing.
Jewelry styles discussed include Art Nouveau, Surrealist, Baroque, Roccoco, Renaissance, Pre-Columbian, Greek, Gothic, Medieval, Zuni, North American Indian and others. In the Introduction Morton relates modern jewlery making to Mid Century Modern movements in architecture (Eero Saarinen's Trans World Flight Center in Kennedy Airport New York), Jackson Pollock paintings, and sculpture.
Several really cool pieces designed by Harry Bertoia and Alexander Calder. Other pioneers in contemporary jewelry design, many of whom were working in the 40s and 50s, include David Aaron, Franz Bergmann, Bob Winston, Stanley Lechtzin, Ruth and Svetozar Radakovitch, Florence Resnikoff, Adda Husted-Anderson, Fannie Hillsmith, Doris Hall, Fred Farr, Philip Morton, Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Sam Kramer,Frederick Lauritzen, Andrew Grima, and others.
Interesting discusssions of the various exhibitions that were seminal in the advancement of contemporary jewelry - the Walker Art Center Exhibitions, the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, the 1964 St. Paul Gallery Exhibition.
Appendix A is Lists of Historical Exhibitions of Contemporary Jewelry and includes some photos, artists dates, and locations of Contemporary Jewelry National Exhibtions at MOMA, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Milan Italy, London England from the 40s through the 60s.
Simply a must for any one interested in making, collecting or dealing in Modern Jewelry.
