George Jones and Tammy Wynette are undoubtedly two of country music's greatest singers, and when the two married in 1969 a series of duets was as hotly anticipated by fans as it was inevitable. The two didn't disappoint; although their marriage was a well-publicized failure, their musical partnership was an unqualified success, producing three number one hits and ten top twenty singles.
THE PRESIDENT AND THE FIRST LADY collects all but one of the duo's chart singles ("A Pair of Old Sneakers" is the only hit missing) along with some of Jones and Wynette's better album tracks. All of the recordings are produced by Billy Sherrill, whose taste for slick production is evident throughout; fans of rawer traditional country might find that Sherrill's smooth style takes some getting used to. Still, the singing is phenomenal, especially when Wynette stretches into the upper strata of her register, as she does on "Let's Build a World Together" and "Someone I Used To Know." Some of these songs have aged better than others, but the best--among them "Golden Ring," "We're Gonna Hold On," and "Take Me"--are certifiable classics.
