VISION
Vision is the most important sense used in flight.  During day or night, IMC or VMC, vision is the sense that makes crew members aware of the position of their aircraft in space.  The eyes can rapidly identify and interpret visual cues during daylight.  During darkness, however, visual acuity is decreased.  Night vision devices improve the capability of the human eye to see at night.
ANATOMY OF THE EYE
THREE TYPES OF VISION
Photopic Vision:  Experienced during daylight or when a high level of artificial illumination exist.
Mesopic Vision:  Experienced at dawn, dusk, and during full moon light.
Scotopic Vision:  Experienced under low light levels.

LIGHT SOURCES
Natural:  The moon is the most important source of natural light at night.  The stars provide some background illumination.
Lunar light:  The moon provides the greatest amount of ambient light at night.
Solar:  Ambient solar light is usable for a period following sunset and before sunrise.

Artificial:  Lights from cities, automobiles, fires, and flares are normally sources of small amounts of illumination.
PHASES OF THE MOON
New Moon -  eight days, 0 to 50 percent illumination
First Quarter Moon - Seven days,50 percent to slightly less than 100 percent
Full Moon - Begins at 100 percent, ends seven days later at 50 percent
Third Quarter Moon - Seven days, begins 50 percent, ends 2 percent

INTRODUCTION TO  NIGHT VISION GOGGLES
NVGs greatly improve night vision, but they require some degree of light to function.

NIGHT NAVIGATION
Navigation is a difficult task to perform at night at terrain flight altitudes because the distance at which an object can be seen is reduced.  To ensure accurate navigation, aircrews must be able to identify man-made or natural features.  Detailed planning and teamwork are key to mission success.
