My apologies to those of you who were bidding on this piece when my listing was cancelled. Unfortunately, I listed this item in the wrong category. Because this piece was included in a large lot of linens and textiles from a local Antiques and Estate liquidator, I have no knowledge as to its history, or the artist who made it.
Rugs are not my area of expertise, so if you have any information that you would like to share, I will greatly appreciate it. I've tried to take large, detailed photos but please ask if you need additional views.
This very old rug is in excellent condition with no holes, worn areas, raveling, etc. but it may have some storage odor. I "aired it out" for several days prior to taking photo's but because it was stored for so long, it probably will need a gentle cleaning or brushing to remove any further storage odors or dust that I may have missed. It is not soiled by any means, but common sense tells me that it surely collected a little dust in storage.
The rug is handwoven in a heavy wool. The weave is very tight and thick. I do not know the exact age of this piece.
It has a very old handwritten cardboard hangtag on it which has a lot of numbers and figures (that I don't understand). They may relate to the thickness of the wool, the rug, or the rug measurements in some unit other than inches. I've pictured the tag below.
Upon close inspection, you can see tiny "openings" where each different color "connects" to the next and where the black border attaches to the red background. In my photo's, these areas look like white spots because you can see my white ceramic tile under the rug. The "openings" are not very visible on the actual piece, unless you examine it at very close range. It was my understanding that these openings are created by a loom when the rug is made. They are very evenly spaced. It's a little hard to describe this, so I've inserted a close-up photo below which will explain it better than I can.
This is a smaller rug which measures 31 1/2" long by 15" wide (not including the fringe). The fringe is made in a natural hemp or jute. The rug is the same on both sides and could be reversed.
This piece would also make a beautiful wall hanging. It is very colorful with a "true red" background, deep black border and accents, and blue diamond shapes. The colors are vivid and unfaded. The red color looks a bit darker in some of my photo's but it is actually a beautiful true red. My 4th photo shows the color pretty accurately.
This is a beautiful little rug that is quite old but has been well cared for.
I also have a 4 piece lot of small handwoven wool pieces that came to me with this rug. I'm not sure what they were intended for but they would make some nice accent pieces for decorating. Please see my other items for that lot.
