Synopsis
This biography of Richard Etheridge, who was born a slave, recounts his life and achievements, the most memorable being his leadership in the Life-Saving Service (LSS), a 19th-century predecessor of the Coast Guard. Upon his assignment as keeper of a station, his white crew quit, and Etheridge recruited and trained an all-black team that chalked up an exemplary record of rescues, which authors Wright and David recount.

Publisher's Note
A history of the U.S. Lifesaving Service, an ancestor of the modern Coast Guard, focuses on a crew of seven men, led by former slave and Civil War veteran Richard Etheridge, stationed on Pea Island, North Carolina, and their heroic exploits, including the rescue of the entire crew of the E. S. Newman during a hurricane in the 1890s.
