Description

ANATOMY OF CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE
with measured drawings

by John . G. Shea, copyright 1965,1973, published 1973, 9x11 inches, 191 pages
Vintage hardcover book in good condition. No dust jacket. Brown faux cloth boards have mild shelfwear, two smaller than a dime area of surface loss. Silver title on spine. Inside pages are clean and tight, binding is solid.

I think  this book is the #1 go to resource for understanding and/or making your own Mid Century Modern furniture.

from the book:
"designed to span the interests of contemporary design enthusiasts who  desire to know more about the origin and development of current contemporary styles,   as well as for the practical homemakers who are able to apply their hands to actual  construction of contemporary projects.

The second chapter presents a variety of elementary furniture projects, together with 'how-to' construction drawings which can be easily followed even by  individuals of limited craft skill.

Easy ways are shown to assemble complete projects from standard parts and fittings that can be bought at hardware and department stores, and there are many plans for the woodworking craftsman, including the author's original designs ...

and a chapter on 'contemporary classics' complete with measured drawings showing how these pieces are actually made by leading furniture maufacturers.

Page after page of step-by-step photo sequences give graphic and detailed information on exactly how contemporary objects are built, assembled, installed, arranged and finished.

Simplified methods of upholstery and a complete chapter on furniture finishing    including the application of rich Danish oils and other modern techniques."

Please take a close look at my photos of the CONTENTS page of the book for a complete idea of the incredible scope of this book.

Examples by Mid Century Modern design superstars like Alvar Aalto, Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Paul Kjaerholm, George Nelson, Charles Eames, Mies Van Der Rohe, Jan Knudsen, Eero Saarinen and of course John Shea's own designs. Companies whose wares are shown here include Artek (the furniture company founded by Aino and Alvar Aalto in Finland in 1935, Artek is still going strong and can be seen in the April 2007 issue of DWELL), E. Kold Christensen in Denmark, Doo-It Store, Drexel Furniture Co., Furn-A-Kit Inc., Gerber Wrought Iron Products , Herman Miller, Heywood-Wakefield, Interna in Denmark, The Door Store and more!

Measured drawings and plans for room dividers, chairs, bureaus, sectional and platform sofas, bedroom furniture, coffee tables, Heywood-Wakefield dining and bedroom furniture and lounge chairs, built-ins, china hutch, slat benches, pedestal table, peg-leg tables, tension pole shelving, bunk beds, kitchen storage, sectional wall units, applying surfaces and wood veneering, and so much more!
