The work: Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas (Natural History of the Birds of Central Europe), by Johann Friedrich Naumann, published by Gera-Untermhaus Fr. Eugen Köhler 1897-1905. Johann Friedrich Naumann (February, 1780 – August, 1857) was a German scientist and editor. The plates show the birds in their natural surroundings, among the many artists are O. Kleinschmidt, J. G. Keulemans, O. van Riesenthal and others. The eggs are depicted in a series of special plates, based on Eugene Rey's collection. Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (June 1842, Rotterdam - March, 1912, Ilford, London) was a Dutch bird illustrator. Keulemans worked in London from 1868. He regularly provided illustrations for The Ibis and The Proceedings of the Zoological Society. He illustrated many important bird books, his work is characterised by its consistency and focused to an extraordinary degree on the rendering of fine detail. Most of the illustrations by Keulemans were produced through traditional lithography, allowing for a finished product that depicts a vivid, life-like figure through depth and tone. Printing was carried out by the two firms of Mintern and Hanhart, and early in his career, some were printed by P. M. W. Trap. Naumann is regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe. He published The Natural History of German Birds (1820-1844) and The Eggs of German Birds (1818-1828). The Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni is named after him. This original chromolithograph stands as both a beautiful and scarce example of 1890's natural history art. References: Anker no.356.
