BABYSAN - OCCUPIED JAPAN PIN-UP CARTOON BOOK HUME 1953

Up for your consideration is this very nice find of “Babysan – A Private Look at the Japanese Occupation” by U.S. Navy cartoonist, Bill Hume. This is the November, 1953 printing of this soft cover 127 page cartoon book. Hume created the Babysan pin-up girl cartoon to help boost the morale of servicemen serving in Japan during the post-WWII occupation. Each cartoon shows the fun-loving Babysan character interacting with Occupation sailors, along with a page of insights juxtaposing the historical cultural issues between east and west as seen from both perspectives. There is also a glossary of Babysan’s broken English and Japanese terminology. An interesting and humorous look at the social life of that time and place in history. This book is in very good condition. It is complete, tight and fully intact, with just light wear. There is a partial ink-stamped impression at the upper left cover corner. There is an inscription from “Bill”, who was on “R&R” in Japan, on the fly-leaf page to his brother Gary stating “If your time comes, may you visit Japan!”. 5x7 inches.
