This iconic image of a nude man was accomplished in 1492, using pen and brown ink. The notes, describing the anatomy and proportions of man, are in da Vinci's legendary mirror writing. The proportions are based on the work of Vetruvius, an ancient roman architect, hence the name Vitruvian Man. It has recently been discovered that the Vitruvian Man is also an algorithm for the squaring of the circle. Born in 1452, da Vinci was the illegitimate son of a peasant woman, Caterina. Although best known for his works of art, such as Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, Leonardo's genius knew no bounds and he excelled in the fields of both art and science. He died, aged 67, in the arms of the King of France.
