YOU ARE BIDDING ON: SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT and EIDOS GAMES present: Herdy Gerdy is a video game for the Playstation 2 released in 2002. It was developed by Core Design, and published by Eidos Interactive. Critically, the game was a modest success, receiving an aggregate score of 70% on Game Rankings. When the evil wizard Sadorf casts a spell on Gerdy's father, the Master Herder Gedryn, Gerdy is determined to save his dad and the magical island that they live on from Sadorf's evil rule. It has a large environment (around 40 different areas) as well as 12 different fictional creatures to herd into their different pens. The game requires strategic thinking as some animals eat the others, some animals cannot jump, some cannot swim and each animal kind requires a separate herding technique. The player has to collect a variety of herding tools, and there are alternate pathways to reach the end. Items Magic Boots - The magic boots help Gerdy jump higher. Feather - The feather helps Gerdy climb on ladders. Gloves - The gloves help Gerdy push large blocks with hand-prints that are in his way. Swimming Costume - The swimming costume helps Gerdy swim. Herding tools Herding Stick - Doops are attracted to its sound and will gather around it. Magic Flute - When Gerdy plays it some creatures around him will follow him as long as he keeps playing the flute. Elven Horn - Emits a short blast that will scare off most creatures. Magic Hammer - The Hammer is for smashing rainbow buttons to move onto the next area or unlock a new section. Creatures Doops: Gerdy needs the Herding stick to put them into their cage. They stay around the herding stick. He can also chase them into their cage. Bleeps: To make Bleeps follow Gerdy, he needs the magic flute. They also gather around the herding stick. Gromps: If they see Gerdy they chase him. Gromps hate the horn so they will chase Gerdy if they hear the horn. They eat most other creatures. Grimps: Grimps are little black creatures. They eat most other creatures and attack Gerdy if they see him, unless Gerdy blows the flute. They hate the sound of the horn and will be temporarily 'stunned' if they hear it. Honks: They follow Gerdy if he blows the flute. They also gather around Gerdy if he blows the horn. Glooters: Glooters can be found in Foxtown. They follow Gerdy if he blows the flute. Honklings: Honklings are the babies of Honks, they also follow the flute when played by Gerdy and go into the same pens as Honks. Ants: The ants are found in The Gorge. They follow a "music ant" if Gerdy is playing the flute. Gameplay The game is best described as a virtual shepard sim, with some adventure and platform elements. The player must herd enough creatures into their pens to unlock areas and new levels. However, the various creatures have certain reactions and skills; some swim whilst some drown, for example. The levels themselves are difficult to negotiate, with pirate ships, winding caverns, and ruins blocking Gerdy's path. The head-up display is relatively simple: there are three coloured displays at the top of the screen. To the left, the display shows the number of dead animals. The next, in the centre of the screen, represents those alive and free, and the display on the right shows those that have been captured. At the bottom of the screen is a bar with dots: this shows a ratio of how many animals have been captured to the total of animals in the level. Each dot represents 5% of the this shows in the ratio to the level how many creatures you have captured. Finally, the map shows the player's position, animals, pens, rainbow buttons, and the gypsy at the end of the level. for the SONY PLAYSTATION 2/PS2!
