*This is a 'RUB-A-DUB, DUB, THREE MEN IN A TUB', Childs Ceramic Mug.
*It has the Three Men in the tub on the one side, and the back is blank. It is signed on the base by the maker of the Mug, 'MADE IN ENGLAND', but no clue as to who printed it so long ago.
*We all remember this Nursery Rhyme, but seems there are a few different versions, and variations. I found one site that had these Five. And then I stopped looking. They are:
*1 - Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub;
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
All scrubbing their way out to sea.
*2 - Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub;
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
Turn 'em out, knaves all three!
*3 - Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub;
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
They all jumped out of a rotten potato,
Turn 'em out, knaves all three!
*4 - Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub,
And how do you think they got there?
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick-maker --
They all jumped out of a rotten potato!
'Twas enough to make a fish [man] stare.
*5 - Hey rub-a-dub,
Ho rub-a-dub,
Three maids in a tub,
And who do you think was there?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
And all of them gone to the fair.
The origin seems to be from an old English side-show attraction including three maids in a tub. The rhyme depicts the scurrilous behavior of audience members lacking self-control.
*Which one is correct? I don't know, and honestly, I really don't remember that part about the potato in the end.
*No chips or cracks. The only issue that may be a factor for you is that there are a couple of spots that have a little dirt in the glaze, causing little bumps on the finish.
*This Childs Rub-A-Dub Dub Mug is in excellent condition and measures 3 1/8" (77 mm) tall, 2 7/8" (72 mm) across the top and the foot is 2 3/8" (61 mm) wide. Since it was Made in England, I decided to toss the Metric System into the mix for you.
