About the Subject and/or Author

Smalley, Eugene V. (Eugene Virgil), 1841-1899 wrote for a number of Eastern magazines and publications. In 1882 he traveled west from Lake Superior to report on the Northwestern states and territories for Century Magazine. He later established the Northwestern Illustrated Monthly Magazine which covered the resources of the region served by the Northern Pacific Railroad. He settled permanently in St. Paul in 1884.
