Senator John McCain devotes roughly one third of this multi-generational family biography to his grandfather and father, both of whom had distinguished military careers in the Pacific. McCain relates his youth and his own military career, which included serving in the Vietnam war, where he was shot down and held as a prisoner of war. McCain relates years of torture, and discusses the values and ideals instilled in him by his family. This memoir closes after McCain's release and return home in 1973.
