Book Title:THE FALL OF IMPERIAL CHINA By Frederic Wakeman Jr., Publisher The Free Press 1977 edition SOFT COVERED EDITION Pages 276 CONDITION: This is a used copy and shows some light edge rubbing, rounding of cover corners, odd small scuff mark, and some light creasing of covers. A VERY GOOD CLEAN COPY.
This is an excellent introduction to politics and structural change during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). In accessible and engaging prose, Wakeman concentrates on how power was organized and what led the most prosperous and perhaps most powerful country in the world to collapse into rebellion and foreign domination before finally breaking apart under warlord rule. Wakeman begins with a useful survey of the class structure of imperial Chinese society: peasants, gentry, merchants, and state. He then briefly describes the rise of the Manchus, their inauguration of the Qing dynasty, and the increasing power of the state under the early emperors. Wakeman devotes the second half of the book to Western imperialism, internal rebellion, and the ultimately futile efforts made by the central government to maintain its control. Woven into this narrative is a description of how the changing institutional basis of the state eventually gave rise to independent local centers of political and military power, dooming the Qing dynasty. The book also covers the first encounters with Western traders, the disastrous Opium War, the Taiping Rebellion, the Boxer Movement, and the Revolution of 1911

I have no control over what the Canadian Postal service charges for postage and the fuel surchage. I do add a small amount to help cover the cost of packaging, tape and other related cost for mailing. I do try to offer superior customer service which is something you will not find in a big box store. Have a look at Canada post to get an idea on cost of mailing parcels. If you feel S&H is too high then please do not bid. If you have a question about S&H just email. Once mailed I do not have any control over the post office speed so giving me a negative on this is something beyond my control. I do mail promptly within 24 - 48 hours of receiving your payment. Delays can also be caused by the weather, holidays and on weekends post office is closed Saturday & Sunday, or customs checks at the Canada/USA border. FEEDBACK ebay is now treating anything less than a 5/5 as a negative. If you feel something was lacking just email and let me know as it is impossible to improve if you donot know what is wrong with service. I have noticed that the way people are leaving feedback is forcing good sellers to stop selling on ebay. If you need prompt service method ask for AIRMAIL cost. I try to have all orders processed and shipped within 24 - 48 hours after payment. This might be longer if you pay on weekend as post office here is closed weekends and all holidays.
