Publisher's Note
A young girl can hardly contain her excitement as Papa hitches their house to Granddaddy's old sleigh. They're on their way to church for the Christmas Eve service, and she knows there will be oranges and candy and, best of all, mittens from the mitten tree. This year she's hoping for mittens that are "Christmas-red and snuggly-warm." But when they arrive, the window where the mitten tree usually stands is empty, and the family discovers that all the presents have been stolen. She is sure this will be the worst Christmas ever, until a holiday miracle reminds the entire congregation of the true meaning of Christmas. This nostalgic tale, set during the Great Depression, captures the spirt of the season through High's lilting prose and Himler's luminous artwork.

Industry reviews
K-Gr 3 This story set during the Great Depression is short on originality but long on sentimentality. When the tree adorned with mittens and treats for the children are stolen from the church before the Christmas Eve service, the holiday is almost ruined. The service goes ahead anyway, with the young narrator's parents being cast as Mary and Joseph in the manger scene. The pastor brings in live animals for the pageant, but when the mule refuses to budge, the child gets the idea to use Star, the family's horse, instead. When she and her friend go outside to fetch the animal, they see "a man in a cap and coat and big black boots" (clearly depicted as Santa in the illustration) putting a sack in Star's sleigh. It contains mittens, candy, and fruit. Although the girls believe it is magic, the scene is not effective enough to be convincing. The whole idea is so glibly stated, in fact, that it will take a great leap of faith to accept the resolution. Himler's glowing paintings contrast the warm, golden interiors of the church and stable with the cold blue exteriors of the countryside and aptly reinforce the sense of place. They are the high point of this less-than-stellar effort.

About B-Logistics

B-Logistics began selling online in 2001 in partnership with several major public library systems that needed help managing large volumes of discarded materials. We chose the seller name Universal Athenaeum (depository of books and other materials for learning) to reflect that partnership, and we’re still proud to offer our services to hundreds of public, academic, school and special libraries all over the US and Canada (as well as a few publishers, retailers and wholesalers). By providing turnkey resale and recycling services of discarded books and media, we help libraries manage a difficult logistical challenge, generate positive PR, and earn funds for resources and programming.

Quality Standards

The books, CDs and DVDs we list for sale come from many sources, including public, academic and school libraries. We evaluate each item we list, and we strive to sell only items that are in GOOD or better condition, items that we would be happy to receive ourselves. You will notice in many cases that the library’s original ownership markings and other stamps, stickers and such are still in place. If you receive an item that is not in the stated condition, please notify us within 14 days of receiving the shipment so we can work out an acceptable resolution.

Great Service to Our Customers

We work hard to earn your confidence, and we want you to be 100% satisfied. When you order from B-Logistics, you’ll get your order fast. Most orders leave our warehouse the same day, and all orders leave our warehouse within two business days. Depending on the ship method you choose, you may have your order in hand the same week you ordered it. Although we’re a high-volume seller, we pride ourselves on offering top-notch service.

Great Service to Our Community

When you buy from B-Logistics, you make the world a better place! B-Logistics strives to be a good corporate citizen in everything we do, and your purchases support our good work. We provide turnkey service to our library and other liquidation partners so they have more time to provide much-needed resources to their patrons. We donate tens of thousands of books each year to non-profit literacy partners who bring books to needy recipients worldwide. In addition, we recycle hundreds of tons of unsalable books each year, providing an environmentally-friendly alternative to dumping books in landfills. Thank you for helping us do so much good with your purchase!
