War Babies

Length: 11 Minutes | Produced:1932

This bizarre short film stars the iconic Shirley Temple in one of her earliest and strangest roles. War Babies is part of the Baby Burlesk series that parodied films for adults with the mature characters played by young children. Temple is a dancer in a dark nightclub populated by soldiers. The kid soldiers drink milk, but still ogle Temple like grownups. The surrealism continues as the soldiers try to pick Temple up, and eventually get in a fight over her. War Babies is rivetingly cutsey and shocking: stepping back through time to an era with different values, War Babies stands out as a mixture of dainty entertainment and borderline Lolita.
