Detailed item info
Synopsis
Norman MacLean scrupulously examines the tragic events of August 5, 1949, when lightning struck and started a forest fire in the Rocky Mountains. Thirteen young airborne firefighters were killed trying to extinguish it, when a 200-foot high firestorm erupted into a vast wall of death. MacLean, who had been both a forester and a firefighter in his youth, left the manuscript of this monumental work unfinished at his own death in 1990, at the age of 88; he had spent 14 years writing it.

Publisher's Note
The NYT A River Runs Through It. In 1949, a crew of U.S. Forest Service Smokejumpers parachuted into a Montana forest fire. In less than an hour, all but three were dead or mortally burned. Haunted by these deaths for 40 years, Maclean reconstructs the pieces print.

Industry reviews
"An extraordinary wise and lyrical narrative of wildfire and Smokejumpers; a haunting commentary on birth, sex, death, memory and rebirth; the memoir of 'heat and loneliness'."
Gretel Erlich

"A book that tears the heart, not only for the young men who died in Mann Gulch, but for the old man ...thirty years later...trying to keep himself upright long enough to get it all down."
Pete Dexter

"A remarkable and fascinating account of a remote disaster. MacLean's obsession with the Mann Gulch inferno is immediate and powerful; those white crosses on the slope are no more graphic than MacLean's reconstruction of the tragedy."
Evan S. Connell

"'Young Men and Fire' is at once poetic and high-minded, about rhythm and about writing. MacLean has given us, in his exemplary toughness, his scholarly care, his stylish and wry American skepticism, permanent words to life by."
Thomas McGuane

About B-Logistics

B-Logistics began selling online in 2001 in partnership with several major public library systems that needed help managing large volumes of discarded materials. We chose the seller name Universal Athenaeum (depository of books and other materials for learning) to reflect that partnership, and we’re still proud to offer our services to hundreds of public, academic, school and special libraries all over the US and Canada (as well as a few publishers, retailers and wholesalers). By providing turnkey resale and recycling services of discarded books and media, we help libraries manage a difficult logistical challenge, generate positive PR, and earn funds for resources and programming.

Quality Standards

The books, CDs and DVDs we list for sale come from many sources, including public, academic and school libraries. We evaluate each item we list, and we strive to sell only items that are in GOOD or better condition, items that we would be happy to receive ourselves. You will notice in many cases that the library’s original ownership markings and other stamps, stickers and such are still in place. If you receive an item that is not in the stated condition, please notify us within 14 days of receiving the shipment so we can work out an acceptable resolution.

Great Service to Our Customers

We work hard to earn your confidence, and we want you to be 100% satisfied. When you order from B-Logistics, you’ll get your order fast. Most orders leave our warehouse the same day, and all orders leave our warehouse within two business days. Depending on the ship method you choose, you may have your order in hand the same week you ordered it. Although we’re a high-volume seller, we pride ourselves on offering top-notch service.

Great Service to Our Community

When you buy from B-Logistics, you make the world a better place! B-Logistics strives to be a good corporate citizen in everything we do, and your purchases support our good work. We provide turnkey service to our library and other liquidation partners so they have more time to provide much-needed resources to their patrons. We donate tens of thousands of books each year to non-profit literacy partners who bring books to needy recipients worldwide. In addition, we recycle hundreds of tons of unsalable books each year, providing an environmentally-friendly alternative to dumping books in landfills. Thank you for helping us do so much good with your purchase!
