Henry Kauffman spent a lifetime studying the architecture and functions of farmhouses and other farm dwellings and this book was a natural outgrowth of his visits to both working and deserted farms across the country. In this book he concentrates on farmhouses and outbuildings that were built during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. He was just as interested in the farm outbuildings as in the main dwellings, and writes informatively and with humor about summerhouses, springhouses, bake ovens, root cellars, smokehouses and privies.
