He was the first great American actor, a contemporary of Junius Brutus Booth and predecesor to Booth's son Edwin. His bold, manly Shakespearean portrayals exemplified Andrew Jackson's America, and he was later notorious for his rivalry with the English tragedian Williiam Charles Macready, which culminated in the Astor Place Riots, and for his sensational divorce trial.
