SAGA OF THE GOOD LIFE AND HARD TIMES brings together a moving collection of tracks recorded for RCA in 1967 and 1968. Mostly intimate recordings (many live), with Nina accompanying her burnished wood vocals on piano, or with small combos of musicians, the collection's centerpiece is an 18-minute set of songs recorded at Westbury Music Fair on April 7th, 1968, the night after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. The concert was originally released as the highly edited 'NUFF SAID album.
Three of the selections are included here in their extended form and edited together as a "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Suite," with Ms. Simone's emotional and thoughtful narratives preceding each song. These selections culminate in a remarkable version of her now classic meditation on civil wrongs, "Mississippi Goddam." A wonderful example of Nina Simone in her prime.
