1936 "Japanese Music," part of the Japan Tourist Library Series, #15. By Katsumi Sunaga (there's an explanatory foreword, saying that Sunaga died as he was finishing the book, and his teacher, Hisao Tanabe, finished the manuscript). Published by the Maruzen Company for the Board of Tourist Industry, Japanese Government Railways. 66 pages. Softcover. Printed in Japan. Pasted-on label in Japanese on inside back cover. This is part of a series of beautifully produced booklets, designed to help foreign tourists understand Japan and its culture. Lovely pasted-on color illustration on the cover. Inside color illustration of "Adjusting the pitch before playing Ko-Tsuzumi" by Asami. Many black-and-white photographs. Chapters include "a study of musical forms": gagaku, noh-gaku, music of Koto, Music of Samisen, Shakuhachi music, and western music in Japan. Also a chapter on the future of Japanese music. Measures 5" by 7 1/2". Cover has worn edges and corners. Spine is darkened, and the cover has uneven yellowing. Glue has dried out and entire block of pages has separated from the cover, but the "page block" is in one piece. Pages are clean with no marks or tears. |
