Item specifics
Product+Type: Antique+MapOriginal+or+Reproduction: Original

You are bidding on a rare and very beautiful 100% genuine antique hand colored map of the above region and year from the extremely rare Johnson Atlas.  AJ Johnson was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century.  Many of these maps from this atlas sell for hundreds of dollars at antique shops.  These atlases are also becoming increasingly difficult to find.  Complete atlases are currently being offered at antiquarian bookstores at prices that can range between $2,000 to $5,000!!!

Publisher/Cartographer: A. J. Johnson published maps from 1860 to the late 1880s. He began his publishing empire with the purchase of J. H. Colton’s map plates in 1860. Johnson transferred the original Colton steel plate engravings to cheaper lithographic stones, allowing his firm to produce more maps at a lower price point. The next three years would see Johnson rise to become the most prominent American map publisher of his period. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Johnson transitioned his publishing firm from Virginia to New York, where it continued to produce maps and atlases into the 1880s. Johnson maps are known for their size, accuracy, detail, and stunning, vivid hand coloring.

This map is NOT a copy or reproduction - I don't sell fakes !!!

General Description:

1.This stunning original map engraving has original hand coloring in wonderfully intense colors. It is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail.  Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places.

2. The map is in great condition considering the age of the map.  The overall size of the map sheet is approximately 17 inches by 28 inches.   The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show. This map will look wonderful when matted and framed and will be a great addition to your collection.

3.  The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map.

** I DO NOT SELL REPRODUCTIONS !!!

Map Collecting:

Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people’s attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago!  These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well.  Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable.

All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality.  The value of this original will only increase over time.  Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies.  Why spend the money for something like that when you can have an original for a few dollars more that will only increase in value over time.
