In some lakes, ponds and streams the damsel fly is the trout's favorite food. The damsel nymph can be found in slow, shallow weedy stream vegetation near where the adults are dancing aimlessly along the shoreline. The nymphs are fierce predators, eating mayfly nymphs, other small insects, worms, mollusks, and crustaceans.
There are several variations & sizes of the damsel fly used by fishermen, but I think none are as effective as the olive Marabou Damsel.
The natural damsel moves with a rapid thrashing of its abodomen, traveling in an undulating side-to-side swimming motion which moves them a foot or more before stopping to rest for a few moments and then repeating it all over again. They look a lot like a mini-leech. This wiggle and rest movement triggers fish when nothing else will.
Marabou is the main ingredient which really breathes life into this fly. The waving marabou tail looks like the pulsating tail and abdomen of the real bug. Use a floating or intermediate line with a fluorocarbon furled leader and you will improve your hookups. Retrieve with a slow hand twist and intermittant pauses. A quick strip of a foot or more, every once in a while, will entice a strong take, so hold on tight.
