VACCHI: Imaginary Places for Chamber Ensemble, Dowland

Fabio Vacchi's Luoshi Immaginari is a cycle of five chamber works (for quintet, octet, trio, septet, and quartet respectively) each about seven minutes long. They're a strange branch of neoromanticism that mixes the simplicty and long lines of a Pärt instrumental work, atmospheric flutterings of woodwinds that are equal parts Japanese and New Age, and more astringent string and piano writing that uses some expressionist effects like col legno. Vacchi says his music is only concerned with sounding beautiful, though when he starts with goegeous John Dowland songs and adds instrumental accompaniments that flirt with Messiaen, as he does in Flow My Dowland, you have to wonder if he was a little tongue-in-cheek with that claim. The third work on this Ricordi Oggi CD, Dai Calanachi di Sabbiuno, is a brief and wandering work for five players that's definitely not neoromantic, instead in a gently atonal idiom.
