Here is a pretty scarce True First Edition copy of W.L. White's iconic account of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 They Were Expendable, published in 1942 by Harcourt, Brace and Company.
 
One of the very first accounts of the war as seen by the men actually fighting it, Squadron 3 was engaged first at Manila Bay and later selected to escort General Douglas MacArthur on his escape from Bataan. White interviewed four of the survivors from Squadron 3, piecing together their recollections into a compelling narrative that will truly live for the ages.
 
This book is in good condition, in my opinion. I urge you to study my photos so that you can make your own judgements. Let's start with the dust jacket, which obviously has considerable wear. There are several tears, some of which have been taped from the inside to preserve the integrity of the jacket. There are a couple of small pieces missing, most notably on the spine and along the corners. But the cover images on both the front and rear remain very attractive. I've added a new archival mylar to the jacket, and you can see in my photo (of the front) that it does dress up the appearance quite a bit.
 
The black cloth boards are in very good condition. There's really only minor wear at the corners and the strength and stability of the binding is pretty much as new. On the inside, I didn't see any writing or tears. There's the hint of a crease at the upper corner on many pages, but otherwise the text is clean and bright and very attractive.
 
I have seen a hundred copies of this book over the years, all book club editions or later printings. This is the first true first edition I have seen. It is stated so on the copyright page, and it comes with a dust jacket that has its $2.00 price intact. There are precious few of these available anywhere at the moment, and those which are listed sell for considerably more.
