In Sept of 2004 we were lucky enough to attend a retired Jewelers auction in Grosse Pointe Michigan, the jeweler was a Russian immigrant since his early teens, in 1975 he returned to Russia to visit his remaining family, a boyhood friend worked in the government owned lab where this material was created for use in a number of communication fields. While visiting, the jeweler saw a small chunk of the rough sitting on his friends table and asked about it, the friend took it to a window to show the color change conversation piece. The jeweler had an immediate interest in purchasing some and cutting it into faceted stones for use in jewelry.
The rest is history, it took 20 years to cut all of the material in his spare time and the stones were exceptional! Smaller lots of this material sold at auction for mind boggling prices but just a few had interest in such a large lot of 5000 stones, I was one of the few. You can read the whole story in my written reviews. You will be charmed by the story and the product, just as I was.
This is our most popular product these days and the quality is unequaled in both the stone and the solid sterling setting. Just look at our feedback on these items, people love the workmanship of the sterling settings and the ultra fine quality of the highly polished stones. I have seen many materials of this type but none that come close to the old world quality and color change that these display. Fine quality lab created Alexandrite can run hundreds of dollars per stone but not if you are shopping here. We don't charge market price (we could) but we much rather have repeat customers while making a smaller profit on each piece instead of selling one item and never seeing you again.
This color change lab created Alexandrite will display a number of colors depending on the light source. In incandescence light (regular indoor light bulbs) you will see a burgundy coloring, in indirect natural light (shade, walking your stone to a open window or door or in cloudy or over cast skies will provide the best color change results) you will see blue, green or a wild blue green mix, sometimes with burgundy flashes (but not always). Strong direct sun will provide some of the same effects as indoor lighting will but you may see blue or green flash as well (blue green flash is not seen with indoor lighting).
Please do not confuse this product with natural mined Alexandrite products, color change lab corundum or color change CZ. We fully disclose information on all of the different types of stones we carry. We have included a pic of the results of the stones being metered, natural Alexandrite meters at 1.746 - 1.755, here you see that the stone is measured at 1.748.
A copy of the signed and raised seal certificate that was provided by the auction company when this lot of 5000 stones were purchased is available by email if requested.
Please understand that the ring settings are newly created, it is only the stones that are from the older material, the rings are not 40 years old, only the stones.
