The AC power supply provides an enormous 2,000mA total to 4 attached devices. Check around... you won't find a hub that provides MORE power. Period. It's more expensive than those tiny ones, but as with most things: you get what you pay for...
On top of all that is the fact that this hub is METAL. Top and bottom are shiny black, while front and rear bezels are beautiful chromed metal!
USB is a very easy and reliable method to connect devices to a computer. However, the drawback is that the USB port also provides power to devices that need it (usually external hard drives, scanners, portable printers, etc.).
This 4-port USB hub is powered by an external AC power supply (but it will work fine without power supply as well). The power supply ensures that ALL devices hooked up to the hub will have as much power as if hooked up directly to the computer. This power supply provides a whopping 2,200mA. Most other powered hubs include just a wimpy power supply that maxes out at about 600mA, divided over anywhere from 4 to 12 ports. Do the math, and you'll see why those simply do not work!
If you are a Vista user you already know that many hardware devices simply do not work with it. This hub is 100% compatible with Vista. It works great with Vista, no special drivers needed. Plug and Play. It's USB 2.0 compliant, but will also work with USB 1.1 devices and computers. A green LED status light shows you it's connected to a the computer. It's Plug-and-Play ready, so all you have to do is unpack it, hook it up and you're in business. No drivers to install, no software to load. Beware of auctions advertising "self -powered hubs". Those are the hubs that get their power from the computer and are always underpowered. An AC powered hub is more expensive, but as always you get what you pay for...
