"IN THE preparation of this book, I have endeavored to complete a work on flying which should impart and demonstrate to the layman whatever knowledge he should have, and what procedure should be followed, in order to be a proficient flyer .

I have always noted that the layman regards flying as a sport, and believes that, to follow it as a sport or profession, an ability beyond the average is required.

It was this fact that originally induced the thought in my mind of writing a book which should concern itself with the simplicity of flying. The information contained herein is arranged in the order in which it would be given to a flying pupil by the flight instructor in the course of flight training.

The illustrations in some cases have been made with a twofold object: first, to present a picture of the relative position of a plane to the ground, and secondly, to indicate the position of the controls in relation to the plane itself.

These positions, as well as the figures referring to speed, altitude, angles, etc., must be considered as only approximate, and should be interpreted as presenting a general idea of the case.

I do not expect anyone to learn to fly without actual practice, merely from the reading of this book. But I do expect that the contents will give the reader quite a complete mental picture of flying and its rudiments.

Technical terminology I have omitted as much as possible, and simplicity of language and conciseness of explanation have been my intention -- as well as the presentation of a complete flying course in a nutshell.
