The book also covers the concepts of companion planting, plant propagation, herbs and famous early herbalists, growing vegetables, fruit and nut trees and vines, and eating home garden produce.

David Murray's approach to gardening challenges the traditional concepts of gardening, such as planting vegetables in separate beds from flowers, and adopts the more ecologically sustainable approach of companion planting. He discusses plant breeding objectives as well as issues surrounding genetic manipulation.
